After several years studying physics on Rue d’Ulm, Samuel crossed the Luxembourg Gardens to attend Panthéon-Assas University. The laws of mechanics then gave way to the rules of private international law, a subject that Samuel was passionate about.

After defending his doctoral thesis, entitled “Private International Family Law Tested by the Imperative of Recognizing Situations,” which was honored with the André Isoré Prize from the Chancellery of the Universities of Paris and the Prize of the French Committee of Private International Law, Samuel graduated top of his class in the competitive examination for university professorship. Since 2019, Samuel has taught at the University of Strasbourg, where he directs the Doctoral School of Legal Sciences and co-directs the International Law specialization within the Master of Laws program. Samuel is also the author of numerous written contributions on private international law and co-authored, with Marie-Laure Niboyet and Géraud de Geouffre de la Pradelle, the latest edition of a private international law textbook published by LGDJ.

Samuel's expertise also extends significantly to comparative law, which he studied in depth for four years at the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg. Currently, Samuel is a research associate at the Institute for European and Comparative Law (IECL) at the University of Oxford and has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the International Review of Comparative Law.

In addition to his research and teaching activities, Samuel consults for French and international law firms. The relativity of time is definitely not just a figure of speech!
